Georgia Fifth Graders Demonstrate Creativity and Preparedness Knowledge
Ready Georgia announces winners of its third annual National Preparedness Month kids contest
(ATLANTA) – For the third year in a row, hundreds of fifth-grade students across the state showcased their creativity and knowledge of emergency preparedness by submitting entries for Ready Georgia’s art, essay and video contest during September, National Preparedness Month. Ready Georgia, the emergency preparedness campaign from the Georgia Emergency Management Agency/Homeland Security (GEMA), asked students to submit entries that reflected the contest theme – “Remember the Past, Get Ready for the Future” -- in observance of the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks.
Students took on the challenge of creatively illustrating or describing how remembering the past can help us prepare for the future. In addition, they explained the importance of learning about emergency preparedness and provided ways that their peers can help teach others how to get ready at home and school. Entries included personal and fiction stories, collages, pop-up and figurative art, and videos written and produced by the fifth graders.

“Each year we are increasingly amazed at how knowledgeable Georgia’s students are about preparing for emergencies and their skill at translating what they know into art form,” said GEMA spokesperson Lisa Janak “Not only did the students capture the essential steps to get ready for the unexpected, but they also displayed creative, quality work. We thought every submission was a remarkable piece, which made it a challenge to select winners.”
This year’s judges include GEMA officials and Pam Duncan of Imagine It! The Children's Museum of Atlanta.
First, second and third place winners in each category will be awarded prize packages from Imagine It! The Children’s Museum of Atlanta, CNN, Chick-fil-A (Chamblee Plaza), Chick-fil-A (Peachtree at Collier), Papa Johns and Ready Georgia corporate sponsor, The Home Depot. All winning entries will be featured on the Ready Georgia website, Flickr, Facebook and YouTube pages.
